ESG report — reporting on sustainability and business impact

An ESG (environmental, social and governance) report is a key tool for companies that want to show their commitment to sustainability.

What is an ESG report?

An ESG sustainability report gives a detailed picture of how a company manages the impact of its activities on the environment, contributes to the community and applies proper standards of corporate governance. It lets investors, clients and other stakeholders assess how sustainable the business is — an increasingly important factor in business decisions.

In Serbia, under Article 37 of the Law on Accounting (Zakon o računovodstvu), large companies with an average of more than 500 employees must include a non-financial report in their annual business report — Serbian law treats every large company as a public-interest entity. A new accounting law that will introduce sustainability reporting is being prepared. Many other companies prepare an ESG report because EU customers, banks and investors ask for one. Since the EU’s 2026 ‘Omnibus’ changes, companies reporting under the CSRD may, as a rule, ask suppliers with fewer than 1,000 employees only for what the EU’s voluntary standard for SMEs (VSME) covers.

Key aspects of an ESG report

  • Environmental:
    – Managing waste and resources: how efficiently waste, energy and water are managed, and what is being done to reduce the carbon footprint.
    – Protecting the environment: initiatives to reduce pollution, preserve biodiversity and invest in green technologies.
    – Climate change: strategies for adapting to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Social:
    – Relations with employees: policies on working conditions, health and safety, and staff training and development.
    – Contribution to the community: involvement in the local community, philanthropy and social responsibility projects.
    – Human rights: respect for human rights in the supply chain, and promoting diversity and inclusion.
  • Governance:
    – Corporate governance: board structure, business ethics, transparent decision-making.
    – Risk and compliance: risk management, legal compliance, anti-corruption policy.
    – Investor relations: transparency towards shareholders, dividend policy and communication with investors.
